I took a class at Tone House NYC on Wednesday afternoon, and am getting to the review now. This is because (well I'm a busy lady!), and because I have barely been able to move. I am so sore!
I was hesitant to sign up for this class because all of the reviews were saying that the class was "the most challenging class" they've ever taken. I have this problem that even though I am a trainer and fitness expert, I too still second guess my fitness level.
I decided to take the plunge and sign up for Wednesday's 1:30pm class with Yusuf, and Shaun was assisting. The location is convenient in Union Square. The space is a bit odd. It is only one big room, there is only one bathroom with no shower, and a front desk. The room is dark with orange lighting.
They offer a free towel and water bottle when you get there to check in. Right before class started, Yusuf called us over and started to give us all a pep talk. He then asked about injuries. I don't know why instructors ask about injuries out loud. This is the first thing that I ask a member when the come to my class, but I do it privately. Sometimes people have injuries or stories they would rather the entire class not hear. Anyway, I raised my hand and gave him the basic version of my hip ligament etc. I was very glad that Shaun then pulled me aside and asked me more about my injuries. So I was able to talk to him and feel comfortable that he would know why I wasn't doing a pushup, or other exercises that injuries or weaknesses prevent me from doing.
Then it was like BOOM. We started. The warm up was non-stop sprinting, hurdles, burpees, suicides. It was definitely not a warm up. It was challenging for sure. We broke up into two groups, and one group did rope exercises and the other did core exercises. Then we did some sled and sandbag work. The end of class we did some exercises where we held onto a bar attached to a bungee type rope.
This class was non-stop, no break, no water break, high intensity, athletic training. I would consider myself in pretty damn good shape. If I didn't have injuries and things holding me back, I would consider myself a rockstar. This class definitely challenged me to where I was thinking I needed to step my game up. Most of the others in the class were other trainers, or cross fitters, but mostly in great shape. There were a few who were definnitely struggling. When they say this class is good for all levels, I would 100% disagree.
I really liked this class a lot. I like the group camraderie aspect, and the athletic team feeling. I really thought the coaches were encouraging and motivating. I sometimes felt the nonstop was too intense. A lot of the rotation exercises I would disagree with as a trainer myself. There wasn't a lot of correction on form. When a class is this intense, you better be on your game when it comes to watching people's form and structure.
Overall I had a great experience in this class. I though Shaun was particularly encouraging and nice. I felt he was looking out for a me a bit which was nice. We chatted a few minutes after class, and he was very nice. I went downstairs to a smoothie shop and called my boyfriend. I am now insisting that my boyfriend and best friend (who are both very athletic) come with me to the next class here.
Try this class if you are an avid class taker, and/or athlete. If you're just beginning exercise I would hold off for a bit. Safety is my number one priority, not that Tone House wasn't concerned about our safety. Basically they kicked my a**, and I'm still feeling it hard core two days later.
Good work Tone House!
